Permits and Licenses

Certain outdoor events and locations require a permit or license from the City of Providence.  CSI will be happy to work with you on any part of the event planning process, especially permits which are highly important and can be complicated. You must inform CSI if you are applying for any of the following permits and licenses.

Entertainment License: Any event that is held outdoors on RISD Campus must apply for an Entertainment License. This will ensure that the city will not shut down your event.  Your CSI advisor can supply you with the request form.  The completed form is submitted to the Permit and License Office at City Hall. Once there, you will schedule a hearing date with the City to discuss what is going to happen at the event. This hearing is brief and informal.

Park Permits: Market Square is not owned by RISD. In order to hold an event on Market Square or any other city park  you must go through the RI Parks Dept.  Contact your CSI advisor for the park request form. In some cases, the form must be submitted 90 days before the event, so it is important to make this contact as early as possible.

Road Closures: To have a road closed for an event, contact your advisor at least 3 weeks in advance. Your advisor will work with Public Safety and the City of Providence to close the road.

Providence Police Detail: To have a Providence Police Detail for an event, contact your advisor at least 3 weeks in advance. Your advisor will work with Public Safety to contract a Police detail.

*There may be more licenses and permits necessary in other locations so remember to check in with CSI before holding an event for guidance.
